Is a toothache always a dental emergency?

A toothache is a red flag that something could be going on inside your mouth, but it isn’t always a dental emergency. Sometimes it’s difficult to know whether you should contact your Pascoe Vale dentist or wait to see what happens.

If you’re unsure, we recommend calling our clinic for advice because tooth pain could be an indication of a serious infection.

When Is a Toothache a Dental Emergency?

If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, you should contact our dental clinic right away for an emergency appointment:

  • Severe tooth pain that doesn’t subside when you take over-the-counter medications and affects your ability to sleep or eat is a dental emergency.
  • A fever, swollen gums or a bad taste in your mouth are all signs of a possible infection.
  • A trauma, such as a knocked-out tooth, broken tooth or severely cracked tooth, accompanied by pain, should not be ignored.
  • A lost crown or filling that causes discomfort is worthy of a call to our dental clinic.

When Can a Toothache Wait?

If you’re experiencing mild sensitivity when you drink something hot or cold, and the discomfort isn’t constant, it may not be an emergency. Also, if you get food stuck between your teeth and it causes some discomfort, try to use floss to dislodge the food.
