At Lumino Smiles, we want to help your child develop a positive attitude about maintaining their oral health, and one way to do that is to familiarise them with our dental clinic from a very young age. Not only can we monitor their oral development, but we can also show them that going to the dentist isn’t something to dread or be afraid of. In addition to regular dental care, we also encourage parents to bring their kids into the dental clinic for early orthodontic evaluations as well. Here’s why.
Why Is Early Orthodontic Evaluation Important?
We hope to see your child for regular dental exams and cleanings every six months, but we also recommend that you bring them in by age seven to begin their orthodontic treatment. Although we realize that many children don’t need braces until their teenage years, an early orthodontic evaluation can help in the following ways:
- We can identify any potential orthodontic concerns and create a treatment plan for interceptive orthodontics. Interceptive orthodontics may include space maintainers, palatal expanders, or early childhood braces.
- We can potentially minimize the need for longer treatments when your child is older.
- We can potentially eliminate malocclusion or bite issues, which can lead to dental extractions.
- We can continue our comprehensive approach to dental care by evaluating your child for sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnoea, snoring and bruxism.
Maintaining Oral Health at Home
When your child visits our dental clinic, we will always encourage them to maintain their oral health at home by completing these steps:
- Always brush your teeth once in the morning and again in the evening.
- Be sure to floss your teeth at least once a day.
- Try to minimize sweet treats and opt for healthy snacks when you can.
- Visit your Pasco Vale dentist for regular checkups and exams.
