Does every wisdom tooth need to be removed?

No, not all wisdom teeth need to be removed; in fact, if they are already fully erupted and not causing concern, you may be able to leave them alone.

When you visit us for a check-up, we’ll look to see if your erupted wisdom teeth are functioning properly and in a good position to keep them clean, and if they are, you may not have to worry about extraction.

When Wisdom Teeth Should Be Removed

There are times when extracting one or more of your wisdom teeth is the best plan for your oral health and comfort.

We recommend removing your wisdom teeth if they are:

  • Impacted — When one or more wisdom teeth get trapped in your jaw, it can damage other teeth and lead to dental issues.
  • Partially erupted — If your wisdom teeth are partially exposed, they are prone to infection and decay, so removing them helps you maintain healthy teeth and gums.
  • Crowded — When your wisdom teeth don’t have enough space, they can damage your adjacent teeth.
  • Painful — If your wisdom teeth are causing mouth pain, it’s best to remove them.
