What is sleep dentistry, and how is it different from sedation or local anaesthesia?

If you have dental anxiety, the thought of visiting the dentist may cause sweaty palms and a racing heartbeat. At Lumino Smiles, we understand that dental anxiety, special needs or other concerns keep many people from receiving the care they deserve.

That’s why our Pascoe Vale clinic offers sleep dentistry, but how does it work? And how does it differ from sedation and local anaesthesia?

What Is Sleep Dentistry?

We work directly with Sleep Dentistry Services; they come to our clinic and administer general anaesthesia. You’ll be unconscious during your dental visit, so you’ll have no recollection of your treatment.

During your time with us, Sleep Dentistry Services will carefully monitor your vital signs.

Other Tools We Utilise

In addition to sleep dentistry, our clinic offers the following ways to eliminate discomfort and reduce anxiety:

  • Nitrous oxide — This odourless gas can help you relax during your appointment. You’ll inhale it through a mask over your nose. It wears off quickly, and you can get back to your busy day after your treatment.
  • Local anaesthetic — We inject this medication into your gums to numb the treatment area. You won’t feel any pain during your procedure.
