Invisalign vs Braces: Which Is Better?

Many of our patients ask us if Invisalign or traditional braces are better. However, your dentist must first evaluate your oral health and assess your smile to determine if Invisalign or traditional braces will best meet your needs. Both Invisalign and braces have advantages, and one is not inherently better than the other. Some patients may benefit more from Invisalign, while others may benefit more from braces.

Lumino Smiles Dental is pleased to offer both Invisalign and traditional orthodontics at our Pascoe Vale dental clinic. Thanks to Dr Amir Kiaee's expertise in orthodontics, our dental clinic has helped transform numerous patients' smiles.

Invisalign Clear Aligners

Invisalign uses clear aligner technology to move teeth into the desired position gradually. Your dentist takes an impression of your smile, so your custom-made aligner trays perfectly fit over your teeth. You wear a new set of aligners every two weeks until your treatment is complete.

Invisalign may be suitable for patients who have mild cases of malocclusion, including:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Overbites
  • Underbites
  • Crossbites
  • Open bites
  • Small gaps or spaces between teeth

For optimal results, we recommend wearing your aligner trays for 20–22 hours each day, removing them to eat, brush and floss. Average Invisalign treatment times are 12 to 18 months, but your dentist will speak with you about your specific treatment needs and timeline.

Traditional Braces

Traditional braces use a series of small, thin metal wires and brackets that move teeth into alignment. During treatment, your dentist adjusts the wires to straighten teeth and correct malocclusion.

Traditional braces can help patients with more complex orthodontic concerns, such as:

  • Misaligned jaw
  • Underbite or overbite
  • Overcrowded teeth
  • Gaps or spaces between teeth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Twisted or protruding teeth
  • Narrow mouths
  • Overlapping teeth

Generally speaking, many patients wear traditional fixed braces for 18 to 24 months. But your specific treatment timeline will depend on your oral health needs and aesthetic goals.
