Getting kids started on the right foot is essential to developing a lifelong smile, and we want to make it easy for parents when it comes to children’s dentistry in our Pascoe Vale, VIC dental clinic.
5 Tips to Make Kids More Comfortable at the Dentist
#1 – Make it Fun
We start with a “happy visit” with your young toddler to encourage associating dentistry with something positive. We will give them a ride in the chair, show them how to brush their teeth and have a look to make sure their teeth are developing normally.
#2 – Speak in Positive Terms
Don’t use negative terminology when referring to dental visits or the dentist. Kids don’t know fear about their oral health unless they learn it from somewhere.
Avoid terms like ‘hurt’, ‘pain’ or ‘shot.’ We use gentle terminology when talking to children to help them feel at ease and completely comfortable.
#3 – Brush Your Teeth Together
Children learn habits from their parents and caregivers. They will often mimic what you do because they want to please you. Plus, it gives you additional time together – something kids and parents always appreciate!
Your child will need help brushing their teeth until they develop the motor skills to do a thorough job.
#4 – Keep it Short
We never press kids further than their attention span can handle. We understand that each child is different. We will keep small children’s procedures short so that they never feel stressed or exhausted.
#5 – Nitrous Oxide Sedation
If your child needs additional help feeling relaxed, we offer nitrous oxide sedation, which is safe for kids and adults. It wears off quickly and will not have residual effects.
