Most parents want the best for their kids, and dental health is integral to overall health, but when is the right time for your child to have their first visit to Lumino Smiles?

Your Child’s First Dental Visit

Most dentists recommend that your little one visits the dentist by age one, so we can begin to develop positive interactions and help your child grow accustomed to the sights and sounds of the dental clinic.

Your child’s first visit to the dental clinic is a milestone. We encourage you to write down any questions you have about paediatric dental health so that we can answer them for you. You can also bring a camera to capture those charming moments while your child discovers the dental clinic and their smiles!

The first dental visit is a 'fun visit', which includes:

  • A ride in the dental chair
  • Counting teeth
  • A look in the mirror
  • Lots of positive attention from the dentist and team

If your child is ready, we will do a quick dental exam, noting how their development is progressing. Overall, we want your child to have a great time so they look forward to the next visit.

As your child grows (so fast!), we will begin to incorporate dental exams, cleans and cavity-preventing treatments such as fluoride or fissure sealants.

Preventing Cavities in Children

You can start good oral hygiene during infancy at home by gently cleaning your baby’s gums with a damp, soft cloth after feeding. This will remove residue and stimulate the gum tissue.

Once your child’s teeth emerge, you can graduate to a baby toothbrush, but leave the toothpaste behind until 18 months to two years of age. Then, be sure to use a tiny smear of toothpaste designed for infants or children.

At the dental clinic, we will look for signs of decay at each visit. We can recommend fluoride or fissure sealants when it is age appropriate. If your child develops a cavity, our gentle team will treat your little one in a caring and compassionate way to ensure their comfort throughout the process.
